השם ביתר נגזר משם העיר העתיקה "ביתר" ששכנה בסמוך בעת העתיקה. התקופה היתה פעילה בעיקר בתקופת בית שני , כאשר היתה חלק חשוב מהתנהלות מרד בר כוכבא.
